The NFL PLAY 60 FitnessGram Project uses a collective impact model to encourage youth to participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily.
In an effort to tackle childhood obesity, NFL PLAY 60 was established in 2007, bringing together the NFL Clubs and numerous partner organizations committed to health and wellness of children throughout the country. In 2009, The Cooper Institute developed the NFL PLAY 60FitnessGram Project to support the NFL Foundation in our common goal of making the next generation of youth the most active and healthy.
The primary goals of the project are to promote visibility of NFL PLAY 60 initiatives, assist with the effective implementation of NFL PLAY60 programs, and evaluate the effectiveness of programming with FitnessGram. Today, this collective impact project brings together major NFL PLAY 60partners (The Cooper Institute, Fuel Up to Play 60, American Heart Association, NFL FLAG and EVERFI) to positively impact the whole child.
Many school-based programs claim to increase student physical activity and health, but the real question is whether they actually work? We have the data to prove that participation in NFL PLAY 60 works! Our groundbreaking NFL PLAY60 Longitudinal Study, published in 2017 in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, used FitnessGram to scientifically validate the effectiveness of the NFL PLAY 60 initiatives.
The study showed that students who participate in school-based programs, like NFL PLAY 60, achieve annual improvements in aerobic fitness and body mass index when compared to schools not using NFL PLAY 60 programs. The research does more than demonstrate the effectiveness of NFL PLAY 60 programs; it also encourages wider participation to achieve greater success. We must continue to build an active school environment that supports quality physical education, recess and sports participation.
