Update on The Cooper Institute® Certified Personal Trainer Exam

The Cooper Institute Certified Person Trainer (CI-CPT) program was accredited by the National Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA) in 2006. A nationally accredited certification is required by most employers to work as a personal trainer.

The Cooper Institute continuously completes internal procedures in compliance with NCCA standards in order to maintain accreditation. Over the past 14 months, exam development processes have resulted in an updated CI-CPT exam that was launched on June 1, 2017.

The tasks and responsibilities among the existing Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, as well as the updated Exam Content Outline reflect minor updates. The updated CI-CPT exam is comprised of 125 questions (100 scored, 25 non-scored). The minimum requirement for certification is 65 correct responses out of the 100 scored items.

Be sure to read the CI-CPT Candidate Guide for complete details.

The Cooper Institute offers several updated resources to help you acquire the knowledge to perform as a personal trainer and to help you prepare for the CI-CPT exam. These resources include:
