DATE Study

The Depressed Adolescents Treated with Exercise (DATE) Study is offering a 12-week exercise program with The Cooper Institute to see if exercise is an effective non-medication treatment for depression.

Who Qualifies?  Adolescents, ages 12-17, who are depressed and sedentary, and must be generally healthy and able to exercise.
Exclusions:  Medical conditions that would prevent exercise, current vigorous activity (i.e., sports teams) or concomitant antidepressant therapy.
Procedure:

  • An interview with study staff.
  • 12 weeks of exercising or stretching three times a week, with the first session of the week at the Cooper Institute with a professional trainer. Every participant receives treatment.
  • Trained evaluators would meet with participant throughout the 12 weeks, monitoring his/her depression and effectiveness of the treatment.
  • Compensation for each session attended and follow-up assessments.
