Courses Older Adults and Exercise

Older man and woman walking in park holding handsPrepare to work with the fastest-growing client group? By the year 2030, 20% of Americans will be 65 years or older; currently more than one-third of communities do not have fitness programs specifically designed for older adults. The demand for fitness professionals trained to work with older adults continues to increase as the population ages. This group of clients can be challenging due to health conditions, loss of muscular strength, compromised balance and lack of self-confidence. This course will take you through the process of understanding age-related conditions, assessing abilities and determining an appropriate exercise prescription.

This 2-day course addresses the physiological changes and common health problems associated with aging including osteoporosis, dementia, stroke, hypertension and arthritis. Functional fitness assessments for older adults will be presented in a practical session. Guidelines for exercise are provided along with hands-on sessions using small apparatus to improve balance and prevent falls. Water and chair exercise classes will provide fitness leaders with the skills to prescribe safe and effective exercise for healthy older adults and those living with disease. The unique nutritional concerns associated with aging will also be addressed.

Please contact a Program Coordinator at (800) 635-7050 if you would like to have your course manual shipped to you in advance (a minimum fee of $10.00 would apply). Pre-study in the following areas is encouraged:
