Open Enrollment
If you are a benefit eligible employee with the Cooper Institute, open enrollment is your annual opportunity to make any changes desired to your benefit plans (health, dental) by adding or removing dependents, or switching to or from our base or buy-up health insurance plans. CI has two open enrollment periods: one for health and dental, and the other for flexible benefits.
- For health insurance and dental coverage changes, Cooper Institute’s open enrollment period is held during the month of June for changes to go into effect at the beginning of our fiscal year in July.
- Open enrollment period for Flexible Spending Accounts is during the month of December each year for a January 1 effective date, as these plans are a function of the calendar year.
Federal Law limits your ability to change your elections outside of Open Enrollment unless you experience a “Qualifying Event” and the change must be made within 30 days of the event date; supporting documentation must be submitted to Human Resources with the election change. If you have no enrollment changes to your medical insurance for the given year, no action is required.
For the 2006-2007 Fiscal year, our health insurance coverage is through United Health Care and our dental, LTD, and life insurance is through Genworth or GE Financial. For the 2007 calendar year our Flexible Spending Accounts are managed through Flexible Spending Group.
Open enrollment for health and dental for the 2006 – 2007 Fiscal year was held June 2006. After this time, unless you are a new employee who qualifies for the plan for the first time, no changes in health or dental coverage can occur without a valid qualifying event during the course of the year.
Open enrollment for the flexible spending accounts is during December 2006 to go into effect January 1, 2007. After this time, unless you are a new employee who qualifies for this plan for the first time, no changes in your flexible spending accounts can occur without a valid qualifying event during the course of the year.
