Education & Certification

Become a CEC Provider

The Cooper Institute, founded on June 22, 1970, by Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., M.P.H, has become widely acclaimed as one of the leaders in preventive medicine. As a nonprofit research and education organization, The Cooper Institute is dedicated to advancing the understanding of the relationship between living habits and health and to providing leadership in implementing these concepts to enhance the physical and emotional well-being of individuals.

The Cooper Institute has produced more than 600 research papers and manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and lay publications, with approximately 50 publications per year in each of the last five years. Research papers from The Cooper Institute are among the most frequently cited references in the scientific literature on topics related to physical fitness, physical activity and health. These scientific findings have influenced major national public policy initiatives from the American Heart Association, American College of Sports Medicine, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Training and certification programs for fitness leaders and health professionals are conducted monthly. Programs are offered on the Dallas campus, at other sites throughout the United States and on a contract basis for organizations desiring specialized courses to meet unique needs. The Cooper Institute has certified approximately 85,000 fitness professionals since 1970. With more than 30 years of experience in designing, delivering and evaluating worksite health promotion programs, The Cooper Institute helps corporations, school systems, public safety and military organizations improve their employees’ health and reduce absenteeism and health care costs.

  • Title of educational program/experience
  • Brief description of education and objectives
  • Schedule of the education with time allotments
  • Advertising materials of the educational experience
  • Appropriate application fees
  • Instructor resumes or biographical sketches

Qualifications of the individual(s) conducting the educational program should include current certifications, licenses, and/or a degree in a health-related or medical field, and teaching experience in the topic area.

Application Fees
Multiple course date offerings of the same content are covered under one application fee for the calendar year.  Application fees are as follows:

  • $75.00 (non-refundable approval fee) for each Course/Workshop/Seminar
  • $20.00 for each additional course offering throughout the calendar year
( Example: the fee for a course offered three times per year is $115.00)

  • Title of course
  • Schedule of time allotments
  • Verification of your ACE, ACSM, NASM, or NSCA provider status for this course.

Application Review
After reviewing the: (1) credentials of the teaching staff, (2) course content/objectives and (3) instructional format (lecture, practical, home study, etc.), Cooper Institute staff will determine if the proposed activity meets the criteria of valid continuing education for our certified instructors. We do not guarantee approval and some exclusions may apply (i.e., a college course on statistics does not directly enhance the skills of an aquatics instructor seeking to maintain his or her certification). When applying for a conference or convention, some lectures may be approved whereas others may not.  When approval has been granted, you will receive an approval letter containing your approval code from the Renewal Program Manager within 30 days of receipt of your request.

You may use the following for advertising purposes: "Cooper Approved" or "Provider for Cooper CE ". If you wish to use wording other than this, you must obtain written permission. Also, you may not use our logo without written permission.

All approvals will be valid on a January 1st through December 31st cycle. Example: Approval codes awarded anytime during 2006 will be valid through December 31, 2006. If you apply annually for the same course with no changes, the express processing rules will apply.

The Cooper Institute reserves the right to review all aspects of the courses that have been Cooper approved. We also reserve the right to terminate the provider status if the standards of quality of the approved course have been compromised. It is our mission to ensure that fitness professionals throughout the world receive quality instruction. We look forward to adding you to our list of Cooper CE providers.
