Making changes to your behavior is hard work—we know! It’s not just as simple as “mind over matter” as many people think. Patterns of behavior when done over and over and over again become second nature so that when we do want to make a change it is quite challenging. Intense behavioral interventions have been shown to be helpful in this regard leading to positive results (successful change) however; this is not a realistic approach for most people. This type of intervention typically carries a high cost, requires a great time commitment, and is limited in its reach.
So what is a person to do? Well, you are doing it! To overcome these challenges, experts have turned to technology to deliver behavior change interventions. There are number of ways technology is being used from websites (like you are visiting right now), to phone apps, to computer programs, to tracking devices. And of course with this shift has come research to determine if this is an effective approach. An article published this spring reviewed several such studies and their findings suggest that technology interventions may in fact be effective (1). They did state however, that they feel that additional studies of better design are needed as well as more data on the efficacy for weight maintenance.
So this has prompted us to do a little “investigating” of our own. We want to hear from you! We want to learn more about the effectiveness of our own attempt at using technology to assist you in your behavior change efforts.
