As spring is just around the corner, running and triathlon season go into full swing and so should you! These events aren’t just for seasoned athletes anymore … many of them are designed simply for beginners to enjoy the thrill of participation and camaraderie. Does the term “5K” sound daunting? Believe it or not, many 5K participants are walking the event with their friends and family, and sometimes even their pets.  And don’t let a sprint triathlon scare you off either. Chances are, you have a friend or family member that’s started participating in them recently and your response may have been, “They’re crazy,” or something along those lines. My sanity has been questioned a few times!

Personally, I began my return to fitness in 2007 when I knew that I wasn’t happy with my weight or the way I felt anymore. So, I joined a local bootcamp and found that I was starting to feel a lot better about myself… and formed a strong dislike for spiderman pushups. But the biggest part of the journey was just showing up each morning and doing the workouts. Then, when my competitive nature roared back to life, came the goal setting. First a 5K, then a 10K, then a half marathon, and it has only escalated since then.

The motto that has kept resounding in my head …. “Just do it”. Nike® nailed it. Despite my fears of doing a half marathon – I signed up and ran. Same with the Sprint triathlons … not being an experienced swimmer, I was nervous, but I still was able to do it.

Many communities these days are hosting events on a regular basis - whether it’s an event benefitting an animal shelter, or raising money for cancer research, or to fight childhood obesity – typically you are also contributing to a worthy cause by participating. So take a look around your community website or a local running store’s website to get started. You never know how it could change your life.

In the Dallas area, we are lucky to have a very active fitness community with nonstop events all year round. A few of my favorite calendars to choose events from are the RunOn website, Dallas Athletes Racing, and Playtri.

Good luck and see you all soon!
